Rajasthani traditions in abundance - Camel Fair of Pushkar

The traditional Indian festival of the annual Camel Fair at Pushkar has surpassed the original intention to attract camel traders to now become a major tourist attraction. It is a fascinating sight to see thousands of camels converge on the tiny desert town of Pushkar and witness the cultural festivities that are a part of it. Pushkar is a small town in Rajasthan close to Ajmer and is also known for housing the only temple of Lord Brahma.
Pushkar Camel Fair is held at the time of the Kartik Purnima or full moon. This world-renowned event is the largest livestock fair where camel traders from different locations in India come together to buy and sell their stock. What started as a camel fair is now an amalgamation of art, culture and folk performances that attract tourists from around the globe. It is one of India’s most highly rated travel experience visited by over 400,000 people over a period of around fourteen days. The fair is believed to be around 151 years old with its origins based on a legend mentioned in some scriptures. Pushkar fair starts with the camel trading but holds great relevance for Hindus as many pilgrims throng to gather at Pushkar lake to take a sacred bath and offer prayers. It is considered that the day of the full moon bestows special blessings to the devotee as a dip in the lake on this day implies washing away the sins and also believes to heal several ailments of the devotee. Apart from being the place for animal lovers, Pushkar at this time offers a great spot for shopping handicrafts and traditional items. The shopper’s paradise begins with the vivid blend of colours exhibited everywhere, put forth by colourful textiles, handicrafts and jewellery. If you are looking for vintage designs in jewellery or local craft item, Pushkar Mela is the place to get them. The art and craft exhibition that is an integral part of the fair lends a cheerful vibe to the atmosphere and attracts a lot of international tourists as well.
It does not matter what type of traveller you are. There is something there to interest each one of you. From snake charmers to fortune tellers, puppeteers, acrobats, long moustache competition or folk dances and music; you will be enamoured of the vivid kaleidoscope the fair has to offer. Hot air balloon rides, bridal competition or the luxurious tents, they all promise to transport you in a different world. This year the fair begins from the fourth of November.
