Shibori Sarees - Indigo Folds

Shibori Sarees — The Ancient Japanese Art, Reimagined by Indian Hands

Shibori is the Japanese art of shaping cloth before dyeing — folding, twisting, pleating, binding, and stitching fabric to create resist patterns that emerge as extraordinary organic designs when the cloth is released from its bindings. In India, this ancient technique has been embraced and reimagined by artisans from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, who combine Shibori's Japanese precision with India's vibrant colour traditions and handloom heritage to create sarees of breathtaking beauty. Each Shibori saree is entirely unique — the patterns created by the resist-dyeing process can never be exactly replicated, making every piece a one-of-a-kind work of art. At Luxurion World, our Shibori sarees are handcrafted by artisans who have mastered multiple Shibori techniques, paying above-fair compensation to support this contemporary craft tradition.

Shibori Techniques Used

  • Itajime Shibori — Cloth folded and clamped between wooden blocks to create geometric resist patterns
  • Arashi Shibori — Cloth wrapped diagonally around a pole and compressed to create diagonal stripe patterns
  • Kumo Shibori — Cloth pleated and bound to create spider-web or sunburst patterns
  • Nui Shibori — Running stitch sewn into the cloth and gathered before dyeing to create textured patterns
  • Indigo & Natural Dyes — Most Shibori sarees use natural indigo and plant-based dyes for deep, rich colour
