Ajrakh is one of India's most ancient and most technically complex block printing traditions — a resist-print technique from the Kutch region of Gujarat and the Sindh region of Pakistan that has been practised for over 4,000 years by the Khatri community of master printers. The word "Ajrakh" is believed to derive from the Arabic "azrak" meaning blue — a reference to the deep indigo that is the signature colour of this tradition. What makes Ajrakh extraordinary is its complexity — an authentic Ajrakh dupatta goes through up to 16 stages of printing, washing, and dyeing, with natural dyes derived from indigo, madder, pomegranate rind, and iron, creating the characteristic deep blue and rich red geometric patterns that are instantly recognisable.
