Jamdani Sarees - Floating Motifs
Jamdani Sarees — UNESCO's Intangible Heritage of Floating Motifs
Jamdani is one of the most technically extraordinary and most historically celebrated handloom traditions in the world — a supplementary weft weaving technique where intricate geometric and floral motifs are woven directly into the fine muslin base cloth using a discontinuous extra weft, creating patterns that appear to float on the surface of the fabric like shadows or dreams. The tradition originated in the Dhaka region of Bengal (now Bangladesh) during the Mughal era, when Jamdani muslin — so fine it was called "woven air", "running water", and "evening dew" by the Mughal emperors — was the most prized textile in the world, traded across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. UNESCO recognised Jamdani weaving as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013, acknowledging its extraordinary cultural and technical significance. At Luxurion World, our Jamdani sarees are sourced from the master weavers who carry this extraordinary tradition forward, paying above-fair compensation to ensure that Jamdani continues to be woven for generations to come.
What Makes Jamdani Unique
- Supplementary Weft Technique — Motifs are woven in with an extra weft thread, not embroidered or printed — they are part of the weave itself
- Floating Motifs — The patterns appear to float on the surface of the sheer base cloth
- Fine Muslin Base — Traditionally woven on the finest cotton muslin — gossamer-light and extraordinarily delicate
- UNESCO Heritage — Recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2013
- Two-Weaver Technique — Traditionally woven by two weavers working side by side, passing the extra weft between them
