Jamdani Sarees - Floating Motifs

Jamdani sarees are among the most extraordinary textile achievements in human history — recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and woven using a technique so demanding and so beautiful that it has been described as painting with thread. The word Jamdani comes from the Persian ‘jam’ (flower) and ‘dani’ (vase) — a reference to the characteristic floral and geometric motifs that are woven directly into the fabric by hand, without any mechanical assistance, using an extra weft technique that creates designs that appear to float within the cloth like shadows on water. Originating in the Dhaka region of Bengal, Jamdani weaving reached its peak during the Mughal era when the finest Jamdani muslin — so sheer it was called ‘woven air’ — was reserved exclusively for royalty.

Why Jamdani is Extraordinary

  • UNESCO Intangible Heritage — one of the world's most protected textile traditions
  • Floating motifs — designs woven by hand without mechanical assistance
  • Mughal legacy — patronised by emperors for over 400 years
  • Featherlight drape — the finest Jamdani is almost transparent
  • Each piece unique — no two Jamdani sarees are ever identical
