Ilkal Sarees - Woven Temple

Ilkal Sarees — Karnataka's Sacred Woven Heritage

From the ancient weaving town of Ilkal in northern Karnataka comes one of India's most distinctive and most underappreciated handloom traditions — the Ilkal saree, a GI-tagged textile that has been woven on the banks of the Tungabhadra river for over 3,000 years. The Ilkal saree is instantly recognisable by its unique "Kondi" joining technique — where the body and the pallu are woven separately and then joined with a distinctive interlocking stitch that creates a visible seam of contrasting colour. The pallu, always woven in a rich red or maroon with temple border motifs, is the signature of every authentic Ilkal saree. At Luxurion World, our Ilkal sarees are sourced directly from the master weavers of Ilkal town, paying above-fair compensation to preserve this extraordinary GI-tagged tradition.
