Dev Diwali or Dev Deepawali is the ‘Festival of Lights, of the Gods.’ It is observed fifteen days after Diwali on the full moon day in the month of Kartik. The grandeur of celebration of Dev Diwali is the highest in the holy city of Varanasi, which lights up in the festivities of the day. Such is the magnificence of the view of the city and ghats of Ganges, that it becomes a major tourist attraction from all across the globe. The reverence in the atmosphere bathes you with a spirit of holiness and bounty of blessings.
Karthik Purnima celebrates the power of Lord Shiva. It is believed that He killed the Demon Tripurana on this day, thus the day is also known as Tripuri Poornima or Tripurani Poornima. Further, it is believed that the Gods descend from heaven to bathe in Ganga on this day; hence it is a pious occasion for Dev Diwali to be celebrated.
On this day, thousands of Diyas or earthen lamps are left to float in the holy water of the Ganges, paying respect to the Gods who have descended. The religious ceremony begins with the chanting of the holy Vedic mantras by the priests, lighting Diya at the ghats and a sparkling display of firecrackers to welcome and please the Gods and Goddesses. The devotees take a holy dip early in the morning in the sacred water of the Ganges known as Kartik Snan, followed by deepdan which is offering of the oil lighted lamps in the honour of Goddess Ganga. The entire Ghats of the Ganga from Varuna to Assi is decorated with Diyas and floral rangolis on the eve of Kartik Poornima. Following this, Ganga aarti is performed in the evening on each ghat of Ganges of Varanasi with huge lamps and is performed by 21 Brahmins priests along with twenty young girls.
On the occasion of Dev Diwali, people in Varanasi decorate their houses with diyas and colourful rangolis on the front door. Devotees may fast on this day and it is believed that chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in multiples of one hundred and eight throughout the day wards off untimely death in the family. The day of Dev Diwali also coincides with the world-renowned Pushkar fair in Rajasthan. Besides a religious role, the festival is also the occasion when the martyrs are remembered at the ghats by worshipping Ganga. This is organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi when wreaths are placed at Amar Jawan Jyoti at Dashaswamedh Ghat and at the adjoining Rajendra Prasad Ghat.
