The Significance of celebrity Dhanteras

The celebration of Diwali starts with Dhanteras which falls two days prior to Diwali. It is an auspicious occasion for people all over the country and abroad. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘taxes’ signifies the 13th day of Krishna Paksha of the month of Kartik according to Hindu lunar calendar. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi bestows wealth on this day. There is a custom of purchasing precious things like gold, silver and also kitchen utensils and bring it home. It is believed to bring home a lot of prosperity and good luck. In fact, Dhanteras Puja is not only done for Goddess Lakshmi but also Kuber who is the god of wealth.

As the legend goers, on this day of Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi came out from the ocean of milk during the churning of the sea. According to another legend, when the ‘devas’ and ‘asuras’ performed the ‘Samudra manthan’ or the churning of the ocean for ‘Amrita’ or the divine nectar of immortality, Dhanavantri emerged carrying a jar of elixir. Dhanavantri is considered to be the physician of Gods who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid of the suffering of disease.

On this day, people clean their homes, whitewash it, decorate it and draw rangoli patterns on the entrance doors to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber. The ladies of the house light ‘diyas’ as an offering to ‘Yama’, the host of Death, to avert untimely death in the household. Dhanteras engages themes of cleaning, renewal and the securing of auspiciousness in the form of Lakshmi.

The traditional puja on the day requires the women of the household to be clad in new fineries. At Luxurion World we have ethnic wear collections that are truly divine and just suited for the occasion. Make new purchases on this day as it is an extremely auspicious day for it. We recommend you go for bright shade wear purchases on this day especially in red, yellow or orange as these colours are favourable for the day.

Let us welcome Goddess Lakshmi and God Kuber in traditional ways and pujas clad in ethnic clothes. Wishing you all a happy and wealthy time with the bond we share growing with each passing day.
