Chhath Puja is dedicated to the Sun God and his consort Usha and Pratusha (Chhathi Maiya) in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on Earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. This is the most eco-friendly festival celebrated as there is an involvement of only natural products in the Puja and it does not involve idol worship. Legends say that Chhath is observed since the days of Mahabharata when Karna who was the devotee and son of Lord Surya would stand in waist-deep water for several hours at a stretch to seek his blessings.
