Forgiveness is an act of the divine. But it is all the more noble to ask for forgiveness, to accept one’s misdemeanor or seek pardon. If each one of us could save the fortitude to say sorry, won’t the world be fuller of love?
Micchami Dukkadam is one of the most annual holy events of the Jain calendar when they greet their friends and relatives with Micchami Dukkadam, seeking their forgiveness. Micchami Dukkadam is an ancient Indian phrase, which is translated from Prakrit to literally mean “may all the evil that has been done be fruitless.” It is commonly meant, “If I have offended you in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, in thought, word or deed, then I seek your forgiveness.” The phrase is also used by Jains throughout the year when a person makes a mistake. It is said on the day of Samvatsari which is the last day of Paryushana.
Traditionally, letters were sent and telephone calls made to friends and relations. With the advancement of technology now it is done via social networking sites. Forgiveness is a great healer. It is one of the most important human values. Though it takes a lot to say ‘sorry’, isn’t it lovely to un-baggage the weight of negativity, guilt or hatred. It increases human compassion and love which is so necessary in this self-centered world of today. To give yourself a chance to mend past mistakes is great. It is even greater to forgive someone when asked for.
This Micchami Dukkadam let us not let this tradition be confined to only the Jain community. Let the beauty to mend all human relationships be all-pervading, irrespective of one’s religion. Seek forgiveness, bestow forgiveness.
