Here’s how your grandma’s Kanjieevaram is made.

sothindKanjeevaram is always more than just a saree, it is a family heirloom passed down to you from your mother, which was passed down to her by her mother. It has never happened that a Kanjeevaram has traveled alone. Along with every saree that is passed down, travels love, affection and the experience of ages. Every girl waits to inherit it and treasures it like the Kohinoor once she has it, takes proper care and waits to start her own family to pass it down to.

Origin

Kanchipuram sarees are a blessing of Sage Markand who was a weaver of Gods capable of building tissue out of lotus fiber. Kanchi silk weavers are his descendants.

How is it made?

Pure mulberry silk is used in the weaving of a Kanjipuram saree. This silk is obtained from sericulture in the state of Tamil Nadu. The zari used is brought by Gujarat. This is a perfect example of how our states use their strengths to work together and promote our culture.

This saree requires three shuttles. The right side is worked on by the weaver as his co-weavers work on the other side.  The pallu usually is a different design compared to the saree. To make the saree complete, the pallu is woven separately and then weaved into the saree delicately.

In genuine Kanchipuram sarees, the pallu and the body of the saree are always weaved separately and then joined together.  This bond, just like the bond between a mother and a daughter, is so strong that even is the saree tears, the joint remains undamaged. This is one of the main reasons why this saree is better than most.
