Mekhela chadar is the traditional Assamese dresses worn by women. There are two main pieces of cloth that are draped around the body. The bottom portion, draped from the waist downwards is called the mekhela . It is in the form of a very wide cylinder that is folded into pleats to fit around the waist and tucked in. The top portion of a long length of cloth that has one end tucked into the upper portion of the Mekhela and the rest draped over and around the rest of the body Invariably there is a blouse that is worn underneath the top half of the body. Traditional Mekhela Chadors are made from the cotton, Muga and Pat materials. It is the women weavers of Assam who are the real people behind the production of the Mekhela Chadors. The main hub of these Mekhela Chadors is a tiny town called Sualkuchi, situated at just 35 kilometers from the city of Guwahati. Sualkuchi is responsible for the majority of the Mekhela Chadors that are being manufactured in Assam. The Mekhela Chadors made in this small town are highly sought after by women in Assam and the rest of India, alike. Sualkuchi is also known as the Manchester of Assam. Luxurionworld offers wide variety of Mekhela Chador, which are procured directly from the weavers.

FABRIC: Cotton fabric is a natural fabric and is used to make light weight sarees. This material is a favorite because it keeps the wearer cool and is easily washed. Cotton fabric is very popular in a tropical country like India, because of the soft twist imparted by the hand, maintains the hairiness of the yarn to an extent, which gives maximum comfort. Cotton is used to create beautiful saris and is an integral part of the sari weaving tradition of India.
