FABRIC: Dupioni Silk (meaning double) is produced when two or more silkworms spin their cocoons closely together. Dupion silk is the most widely known silk and is made in India. It is a medium weight silk and has a slub that gives it a textured effect. Dupioni has a crisp, scrunchy hand, a rough, uneven texture and a dull luster. This silk is easy to dye so fabrics are often brightly colored. Dupioni silk is a handwoven silk that is traditionally dyed with a variety of vegetable-based dyes. Newly woven silk is stiff to the touch. Washing the material however, softens it and shrinks the silk by up to 25 percent. This shrinkage is problematic when dealing with store-bought clothing, but by washing the fabric before sewing, you can get the shrinkage out of the way.
In Kadwa weave, each motif is woven separately unlike in a normal Benarasi Fabric. Using this technique many different motifs, each of different size, color, and textures can be woven on the same Fabric which is quite difficult to weave otherwise . It takes longer on handloom, but makes a more robust pattern, which stands out on the fabric.
